What does high blood urea nitrogen mean?

BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) is an indicator of kidney function and in medicine, high blood urea nitrogen means serious kidney damage.

Urea nitrogen is the end product of protein which is the basic of life. Urea nitrogen circulate with blood and when they come to kidneys, they get out of the body through urine. High BUN means kidneys can not work as well as they did before to cleanse blood.

Complications of high blood urea nitrogen

Mild elevation of blood urea nitrogen might cause no symptoms, but if no treatment is given, BUN level will become higher and higher. At that time, the following complications are caused easily.

1. Heart problems

High BUN indicates kidney problem. Our kidneys serve us as filter and when they fail to function properly, lots of toxins will build up in blood, which is very harm for heart. Additional, healthy kidneys also help us maintain electrolyte balance, so kidney problem always cause electrolyte disorder. Hyperkalemia is a common electrolyte problem in kidney disease, and it causes heart problem easily.

2. Gastrointestinal discomforts

Gastrointestinal discomforts caused by high blood urea nitrogen include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

3. Skin problems

With very high blood urea nitrogen, some skin problems like dry skin, dark skin and itchy skin are caused easily. Among them, skin itching is the most common complain.

4. Respiratory system problems

Respiratory system problems related to high BUN are difficulty in breathing, deep breath, shortness of breath, and ammonia taste in mouth.

5. Bone problems

Bone complications include bone pain, bone fracture and osteoporosis.

6. Anemia

This complication usually presents as dizziness, pale skin, loss of energy, shortness of breath, leg cramp and insomnia.

High urea nitrogen level in blood means kidney problem. Kidney plays multiple roles in our body, so when there is kidney problem, all the body systems might be involved. For this reason, we may suffer from various complications when there is high urea nitrogen level in blood.
